A substantial expansion and re-arrangement of an earlier, shorter piece published on SibeliusMusic under the title "Petite Marche Solennelle". My thanks to John Holland for his enthusiasistic support and guidance when I began tackling the challenges of writing for a large wind orchestra.
The Prelude takes its opening notes from the March that follows. The solemn ceremonial March is subtitled 'Homecoming and Final Procession' and evokes the mixed emotions that greet any returning group of soldiers - from reunions with their families to memories of conflicts from which comrades have not returned and whose names are yet to be inscribed on a memorial somewhere.
The mp3 is taken from the first performance by the Lambeth Wind Orchestra, conducted by John Holland, on 30th October 2010. The recording was made by students on the Tonmeister Course at the University of Surrey.
