This piece wasn?t really supposed to happen quite yet, but its eventual arrival was certain. While I was shopping for Japanese snacks in the East Village, Elaine (or, Ms. Sutin) phoned and asked me to arrange something for three violins. I was busy shopping and suggested that it would take me very little time to arrange the ?Czardas? by Monti. We agreed; the snacks were good.
But what was supposed to have been a simple arrangement turned out to be a battle of the conscience. I had never seen the sheet-music to the Monti before, and having always played it by ear found no interest in discovering it on paper. The Monti ?Czardas? is, after all, a sort of an ?aural tradition? amongst violinists, passed down from one drunken fiddlefest to another. Yet there was the outstanding request for an arrangement and it came almost on the eve of the Elaine?s birthday?
And so it was born. It should?ve taken no longer than one night to compose, but I was so giddy about the project that I wrote too many themes. In trying to tie the themes together, I decided to cast the piece (much in reflection to the Monti) in vague ?mirror? form (i.e. A-B-C-D-E-D-C-B-A). Hope that you will enjoy it.
