The national anthem of the Republic of the Philippines is ’’Lupang Hinirang’’(’’Beloved Homeland). The melody was composed by Julian Felipe(1861-1944)at the beginning of June 1898. The music was presented to the leader of the independence movement, General Emilio Aguinaldo and was played in public for the first time on the occasion of the declaration of independence on the 12th of June 1898. The young poet and soildier Jose Palma(1876-1903), wrote the Spanish words to the melody in 1899. The work was adopted as the national anthem in 1935, though with words in the Philippino national language Tagalog.
