For the study "perfect counterpoint writing," and to hear the rich beauty of 6-voice Renaissance polyphony, this Kyrie adapted from the "Pope Marcellus Mass" is an excellent model.
Performance ideas: The top voice of this arrangement may be performed as is on any C-pitched soprano wind instrument, i.e., flute/tenor recorder/oboe/ or C trumpet. The trumpet works best with the French/English horn substitution. Another option: transpose the top voice up a step to permit an additional Bb clarinet, a soprano sax (or Bb trumpet).
