As it evolved, this movement gradually brought to mind the annual last night of the summer proms at the Royal Albert Hall in London, where the standing promenaders, almost within baton distance, and wearing their hats and other paraphernalia, while bouncing/launching balloons etc, sing, hum and sway along to the music; great fun!
This movement is somewhat atonal in nature and although a technical analysis will show that sections can be picked out here and there to be in particular keys, overall there seemed little to be gained in separating these out to ease sight reading, as the quantity of accidentals either way is about 50/50. The movement requires fast and furious finger work in places to show off the soloists tenacity and brilliance, ably supported by the orchestras sections. Unusually, there is an opportunity for audience participation, humming and swaying to a melody which appears about half way through (bar 451). The melody is passed around the orchestra as the movement continues, the horns having a perhaps unexpected almost solo spot which works well with the main theme. An mp3 is provided to provide a more realistic overall sound than midi, but this unfortunately contains brass and woodwind drop-outs in places.
