8-bar blues in C-dorian. 8-bar preferred to the more usual 12-bar blues for this piece as, in combination with the 5-time, it imparts a lively restless character. The title (for those who don't know) is the answer to the question "What's the difference between a duck?". (If English is not your first language, don't worry too much about this!) It seemed a suitably quirky title. The structure is: intro, theme, 3 sample improvisations in differing styles (A: percussive and harmonically wild, B: elaborated version of theme, C: melodically freer) before restatement of theme. Written for my daughter Jessica on piano, with a bass part simple enough for myself. NOTE ADDED OCT 2001: I have taken up several of Roger Freundlich's ideas in an arrangement of this for a larger ensemble entitled "The Other Leg". My daughter has has not yet played the original version much. She seems to prefer Beethoven - I can't imagine why.
