Written to introduce my daughter Helen (aged 9) to jazz after she gained a distinction in her grade 2 violin exam. The violin/guitar combination is well established in jazz, the major exponents being Joe Venuti/Eddie Lang and Stephane Grappelli/Django Reinhardt. However, I could not find any suitable sheet music and there is a serious shortage of jazz violin music on Scorch. The structure of this piece is: intro, 32-bar theme in AABA form (bars 7 to 30), three variations with an improvised feel, and coda. The final A section of each variation stays close to the original theme, which gives the piece the character of a rondo. The violin part can be played in first position throughout (by using slightly unconventional fingering in places!) and is not far above grade 2 standard except for the second variation (bars 62-86)and the triplets in bar 118. These parts can of course be omitted, or better, create your own version instead. The guitar should be acoustic (I use an ordinary nylon-strung spanish guitar) and played in percussive jazz rythm style: in the 4-to-a-bar sections, use down strokes only (thumb or plectrum) and cut each beat short by releasing the pressure of the left hand and/or damping with the palm of the right hand. There is no need to stick to the chord voicings written here - these are just examples written out to create a suitable sound in Sibelius.
