The work is introduced and punctuated three times, each time by a pair of a statement and an improvisation. The statements are presentations of the series, broken up to create a melodic shape. The improvisations are musings on the series. These get slower as the work progresses, whereas the main movements become faster.

The first main movement, lament, is placed high in the cello?s range.

The second main movement, dance, is gentler in mood, almost playful at times.

The third and final main movement labyrinth is a moto perpetuo that leads without a break into the coda, the fourth and final improvisation on an unheard fourth statement. Although derived from the series, it is a final cadence in C.
