In this arrangement of "Materna," the tune nearly always given to "America, the Beautiful," I attempted to musically evoke some of the words. The piece begins with undulating figures in the clarinets to represent the sea which is followed by a straightforward presentation, with some interjections, of the familiar tune. In the next section I use some point imitation to represent the thoroughfare to follow through the wildernes. The next and longest section, "for heroes proved," I bring in various tunes that are associated with some of the conflicts America has gone through. In the last section, "for patriot dream," I bring back a version of the opening undulating figure, but this time it is more agitated, as a sea would be after a storm has passed, and is punctuated with "alabaster cities" fanfares.
