The main theme is a simple modal tune which reflects the anonymous 15th century text. However, the choral textures are often quite dense and the harmony fairly chromatic in places. The sensitivity required to sing this piece well makes it a demanding but very rewarding work to perform. The closing bars are as beautiful as anything I have written.
