Let the Music Sound was commissioned by The Barnby Choir of Wilmslow, as they wanted an uplifting anthem to celebrate their 75th anniversary. The text was an original poem written by the choir's Chairman, reflecting on 75 years of music making. The premiere was given in Bramhall on 26th March 2022 by The Barnby Choir, accompanied by Musica Nova.
The work opens with a fanfare of trumpets followed by the choir's initial triumphant statement - 'Let the Music Sound!' The music then turns contemplative, reflecting on what music has meant to the members over the last 75 years. The next section moves into darker territory in the minor key with a much sparser accompaniment. The timpani and basses herald the end of this section, following which the lower strings unleash pent-up energy, with the orchestration building to a horn call. The choir then enters with the words 'then blow the trumpet, beat the drum', the instruments echoing the text. The music builds in intensity as it rushes into the final section, a full scale fugue to the words of 'To sing to life a nobler world, where peace may grow and love may flower'.
A vocal score is included in the part list for the choir to learn from. The piano accompaniment from this may be used for performance without an orchestra.
