The sinking of the Le Joola on September 26th, 2002 was the worst non-military maritime disaster in history - hundreds more were killed than even the Titanic sinking. In this short orchestral work are my impressions of the tragedy, taken chronologically. I've added rehearsal marks at four stages: A- the ferry Le Joola sets out on a short voyage from Zinguinchor in the south to Dakar, in the north - a routine sea journey. B- the Le Joola is greatly overloaded and is listing to starboard. Over 1900 passengers, plus luggage, on board a river ferry designed to transport 500. C- Panic ensues as the ferry rolls over. D- Meanwhile, the Senegalese onshore are unaware that 1900 lives representing 11 nations are in peril, many of them children. The exact number who drowned are unknown, many passengers were unticketed. The Le Joola has never been raised and lies in less than 60 feet of water.
