We have many reasons to be pessimistic about the future: a long pandemic, tensions between nations, gun violence, ultra-nationalism, global warming, and environmental disasters. The list goes on. We fear that the very fabric of civilization is breaking apart and our planet is dying.
Can we find hope that our children and grandchildren will build a better place?
Lamentation for Tomorrow grew out of this question. The sombre mood is punctuated with often arbitrary dissonances like stones against a window, uncomfortable harmonies and voicings, and themes that reappear as bad dreams yet eventually soften. Only you can decide if the ending is hopeful or empty.
Although this work appears to be relatively easy, it requires extreme care to play well. The dynamics require considerable care with stop choices to form the phrases. The tempo must not be rushed. If well played, this could be a very moving work.
