INTERCHANGES, a set of free variations produced by "modal interchange," with a nod to the influence of kora (West African harp) playing. The piece works its way through the seven "Greek" modes, Lydian (the "brightest"), through Locrian ("darkest"), Phrygian, etc., while keeping the same tonic pitch, C. Changes in key signature signal upcoming modal shifts, which mean a quick pedal change in the harp.

Optional Colored Lighting Scheme. Early on in the composition of this piece, the idea of representing each of the seven modal scales by a specific color of light occurred to me. I devised my own table, assigning seven combinations of the primary colors to represent each of the seven modes. The precise moments when these changes in color should occur are indicated in the score.
