Gargoyles possess a natural capacity for the more obscure arts and dabble in them during the wee hours. Thus the first in the series, "Gargoyle Haiku".
This brooding lament begins at m. 1 and ends at m. 13 which would seem a paltry excerpt but the measures are lengthy - mostly 11/8. A device called phasing is employed in the opening bars to usher in a G Aeolian groove at m. 5 before laying down a plaintive melody at m. 7 which fills out the missing tones from a double harmonic major scale (F#-G-Bb-B-C#-D-F) - enharmonically spelling the A# as Bb and the E# as F.
Bars11-13 will take particular care and planning. But if one succeeds it's super groovy and it'll please the Gargoyles so.
The "Gargoyles" pieces share little thematic material yet make the same sinister and haunting aura about them. I sincerely hope that you enjoy this piece as well as the other "Gargoyles" pieces.
