Gargoyles possess a natural capacity for the more obscure arts and dabble in them during the wee hours. Thus the first and second in the series, "Haiku" and "Batik".
The excerpt begins at m. 1 with a curious dotted 8th/16th figure suggesting, at first, a march or the like. But the march, although not halted, is interrupted in m. 3 with a canon at the unison, transforming the march into a slinky shuffle. At measure 7, a syncopated bass is added to fill out the groove. Then we transition, via a super-dominant charged passage of two bars (11 and 12), to the macabre dance proper starting at m. 13. (Yes, intentional. Gargoyles don't play…) The dance breezes through A minor, E minor, B minor, and F# minor tonalities before the excerpt is through.
The excerpt and the piece in general will take great care and planning. But if one succeeds it's super groovy and it'll please the Gargoyles so. And everyone knows what happens when Gargoyles get angry, don't we?
The "Gargoyles" pieces share little thematic material yet make the same sinister and haunting aura about them. I sincerely hope that you enjoy this piece as well as the other "Gargoyles" pieces.
