"For Our Nation" has been used in churches for congregational singing and as a choir anthem, sometimes for 9/11 memorials; it can also be found in a shape-note tunebook, "September Psalms," and in a soldier’s uniform pocket. Words are intentionally suitable for singing by citizens of any country.
The shape-note version of "For Our Nation" was sung at the 2002 National Sacred Harp Singing Convention.
Scriptures I had in mind when writing this text were 1 Timothy 2:1,2 and 2 Chronicles 7:13,14.
FOR OUR NATION
Words and music by Mary Rose Jensen 9/9/2001
For our nation, Lord, we come in prayer. Seeking peace and healing for our land.
May our laws and courts be filled with justice. May our churches be led by Your hand.
For our leaders, Lord, we come in prayer. Give them wisdom in the work they do.
May they trust in You and seek Your Kingdom. And in all their efforts honor You.
For our people, Lord, we come in prayer. Give us love for neighbors and for You.
May our homes and schools be strong and holy. Teaching only what You say is true.
For our witness, Lord, we come in prayer. May we demonstrate a faith that’s true.
May all those who’d hurt us be confounded By protection given, Lord, by You.
