In the summer of 1772 Haydn's orchestra had had a long season at Prince Esterhazy's country estate and were keen to return to Vienna and their families. Haydn produced his Faewell Symphony No.45 to drop the hint. History has it that the Prince got the point and that the court packed up and returned to the city. As far as performance is concerned this makes an ideal item to round off the first half of a concert. Score and parts are well marked with the players'exits which can be managed as theatrically as you wish. First players to the bar get the drinks in!
