The Duet for Bassoon and Horn is a conventionally tonal prelude-type piece. It is meant to be slightly wistful or contemplative in character. The imitative texture was inspired by Bach's Two- and Three-Part Inventions and was mixed with a more Romantic-style melody. In some ways, it imitates a sarabande with its slow and stately movements.
