About 730 years ago, the Hyakunin'isshu has edited Sadaie Fujiwara, himself was the poet. The common name of Hyakunin' isshu is KARUTA among Japanese. The initial idea of Karuta came from bivalve. When you break bivalve into two pieces, people used to find out the matching one. Gradually got popular to persons of standing. The Japanese people usually play karuta in the New Year. The 43 poems are the expression of the love between man and lady. There are 21 female poets and 15 monks.
