Descibed as a 'rhapsodical concert piece'. written in 1904, it is a well-known folkloric piece based on a Hungarian Czardas.
It was originally composed for violin, mandolin or piano, and, of course there is now a multitude of arrangements for all kinds of ensemble, large and small.
While I have followed Monti's score up to a point, I have taken a few liberties, and added a few little extras along the way - as is my wont - though which hopefully don't detract from the effectiveness of the original!
Perhaps I've mixed Czardas with Tango a little in the Bb major section, but, if you want the basic original, there's always one out there somewhere!
I may well make a few more arrangements for other instrumental combinations, when I get the time!
As is my normal practice, this can be played as a regular Saxophone Quartet (Soprano, Alto, Tenor + Baritone) and is harmonically self-sufficient, as such.
However, for any quartets where there is access to a second Alto, I have included an optional Alto Saxophone part, which turns it into a Saxophone Quintet, which is somewhat fuller, and is what is heard on the attached MP3 file.
