It was first performed on 7 November 1993 at the Brangwyn Hall in Swansea by Evelyn Glennie, Richard Hickox and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. This three movement Concerto was written in 1989 at the suggestion of John Fussell. A different instrument is required for each of the three movements, which presents, in turn, three different compositional problems to be solved. Three or four chords are used as the basis for the jolly Finale, with each one being sustained through an entire section. This is the puzzle for the xylorimba - an instrument whose tones disappear very rapidly indeed. Each chord, however, consists of wide selection of notes and the music explores the full range available. Halfway through the movement reference is made to the main tune of the first movement, and this is developed to a high point at the end: con gran’ espressione. The Concerto was written especially for Evelyn Glennie and the composer wishes to acknoweldge her most generous assistance and advice while composing the work.
