This work was commissioned by the Swansea Festival with funds provided by the Welsh Arts Council. It was first performed on 7 November 1993 at the Brangwyn Hall in Swansea by Evelyn Glennie, Richard Hickox and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. This three movement Concerto was written in 1989 at the suggestion of John Fussell. A different instrument is required for each of the three movements, which presents, in turn, three different compositional problems to be solved. That most traditional of forms - the chaconne - is used as the structural foundation of the middle movement for vibraphone. As well as developing a slow, dance-like texture the soloist sustains long tones with a bow during the first half.
This movement, in particular, is thematically and harmonically related to the choral work "Y Serch Lledrad" and the "Etudes" for solo piano (also available on this site): the "motto" of the chaconne and the harmony at the climacteric of the whole concerto are significant. The Concerto was written especially for Evelyn Glennie and the composer wishes to acknoweldge her most generous assistance and advice while composing the work. ERRATUM: The final crotchet in the upper cello part, b.53 should read A flat!
