Martin Luther first published this hymn in 1524 and it became one of his best loved texts. The words are here translated by Richard Massie (1800-1887). The melody appeared in "Geystliche gesangk Buchleyn" (1524). J.S.Bach used the melody as the musical foundation for his cantata for Easter Sunday, 1724, "Christ lag in Todesbanden", BWV 4. The present hymn is the last movement of this cantata.
