Martin Luther first published this hymn in 1524 and it became one of his best loved texts. The words are here translated by Richard Massie (1800-1887). The melody appeared in "Geystliche gesangk Buchleyn" (1524) and the harmony is after Hans Leo Hassler (1564-1612).
