This overture was written to commemorate the 10th. anniversary of the founding of the Roding Players Orchestra. The slow introduction leads quickly to an opening allegro (led by clarinet and strings). This subsides into an extended slow section featuring interplay between solo flute and bassoon and, later, a lyrical melody on alto saxophone (cued in oboe). After a lively dance tune in compound time, the return of the stately mood of the opening bars brings the piece to a close with a fleeting reference to ’Happy Birthday’.
