The Dominion of Canada was born in 1867 by the confederation of Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. The Northwest Territories and Manitoba were added in 1870. But the case of British Columbia was not straightforward, since three different countries each had good reason to desire jurisdiction over it: Britain, the United States and Canada.
