The city evokes the very soul of jazz music - it was the root of all jazz, and therefore the vast majority of modern popular music.
The first chord contains all of the notes of the F blues scale.
The main theme is carried throughout the whole piece, and there are chorale moments, blues moments, and a dixieland middle, culminating in a frantic canon of the main theme.
It is a slow solemn blues, featuring a tenor sax doubling on clarinet, a trumpet doubling on harmonica, and a guitar with option of a banjo.
