"Blaenwern" was written in about 1904 by the prominent Welsh Methodist musician William Rowlands. The tune takes its name from a farm in Pembrokeshire, Wales, where the composer's son recuperated from pneumonia as a boy. The words were written by Joseph Scriven, born in Ireland and migrated to Canada. He became a hymn writer and a Plymouth Brethren leader.
