Like most pieces that I write, At Close of Day has a dual purpose: a) to be a manifestation of me, or a musical self-portrait; and b) to be a challenging but enjoyable learning opportunity for those who prepare and perform it, especially but by no means exclusively string students. Also, like most of what I compose, this work is very much in the neo-romantic vein and as such is especially suitable either for Valentine’s Day programs and concerts or for spring productions. It also was used as pre-service music for wedding ceremonies in the summers of both 2006 and 2014.
Stylistically, "At Close of Day," which was inspired by a nostalgic flood of memories in Chambers County, southeast Texas, one summer evening, resides within a gray area between traditional academic, or classical, music and high-brow popular music.
