The first non-European to receive the Noble Prize for Literature (1913), Bengalese writer Rabindranath Tagore continues to be celebrated for his verses’ evocations of intense spiritual and sensual experiences. Working during the climax of British India, the Gitanjali collection of one hundred and three poems exemplify his talents, drawing from both the Romantic European tradition as well as the devotional traditions and spirituality of his country.

This musical setting draws from the following complete text

"Yes, I know, this is nothing but thy love, O beloved of my heart–- this golden light that dances upon the leaves, these idle clouds sailing across the sky, this passing breeze leaving its coolness upon my forehead.

The morning light has flooded my eyes–- this is thy message to my heart. Thy face is bent from above, thy eyes look down on my eyes, and my heart has touched thy feet."

I sought to express the unsung passages of the poem in the music itself, using their imagery to inspire the general mood and contour of the composition.
