Vivaldi’s set of four violin concerti, The Four Seasons, composed around 1721, is one of the earliest examples of programme music. Each work represents aspects of the countryside and its weather, flora and fauna – a completely new concept at the time.

This movement comes from Concerto No. 4 in the set - arranged here for mixed woodwind trio of oboe, clarinet and bassoon - and aims to convey the feeling of being warm and contented indoors by the fire, while the rain comes down outside.
