This Northern background is evident in his music, the present set being no exception (a folk-like sarabande for movement 3 and a Northumbrian style pipe tune in movement 4). He was a great friend of Holst and Vaughan Williams, accompanying them on some of their jaunts into the English countryside. Many of the most famous photos of Holst and RVW were taken by Whittaker on these country walks. This set of pieces was originally for piano duet.
