Whitman chances to witness the mating of a pair of eagles. Apparently eagles mate in flight (it all sounds too fast and furious for the word “dalliance” really, maybe he was trying to be discreet?) And when it’s over, they separate, fly off silently in different directions, and disappear into the distance.
