This slow, chorale-like piece is about saying 'goodbye' in many ways - the title alludes to a 1920s popular song 'When Day is Done', made famous by the Paul Whiteman Orchestra. We were playing this sad, poignant song in a 1920s-style dance orchestra around the time our pianist passed away.
Another early jazz song to exert an influence here was 'Bye Bye Blues' - again, the theme of 'saying goodbye'.
'when day is gone' was commissioned by Peter Thomas (who is also on the SibeliusMusic site), for the Epsom Girls' Grammar Concert Band.
