This beautiful melody, "Greensleeves", was first registered in 1580 to Richard Jones, but is probably older than that. The daughter of King Henry VIII is said to have danced to it. Shakespeare mentioned it twice in "The Merry Wives of Windsor". In 1865 William Chatterton Dix published a Christmas poem, from which stanzas were fitted to "Greensleeves", thus producing this timeless Christmas song.
