Another project for my harmony/composition class, this is my first attempt at a vocal piece of any kind. Wenn die Sonne Weggegangen is a lied for soprano (or a mezzo who can reach a high A-flat) and piano based on the poem by Clemens Brentano of the same name. I decided to aim less for a nice melody and instead primarily aim for effective text painting, hence the use of minor flat-III on 'dunkelheit heran' (darkness descends) and 'mohrenkind' (dark child), the use of a Tristan chord resolving outwards on 'zeigen' (reveal), and the appearance of the Omnibus at the end ('Wie die Liebe nimmer ruht' or my love never ceases).

A rough translation of the lyrics: When the Sun has left, Darkness descends. The sunset has golden cheeks, And the night a veil of sadness. Since love has fled, I am now a dark hcild, And the rosy, joyful cheeks Are dark and sunken. Darkness must silence All pain, all longing; But the moon and stars reveal That which dwells within my heart. When my lips conceal from you My heart's quiet passion, My look and tears must reveal That my love never ceases.
