"We Couldn’t Hear Nobody Pray" is a medley of four Negro Spirituals, these being: "Were You There When They Crucified My Lord?", "Deep River", Standin’ in the Need of Prayer", and "I Couldn’t Hear Nobody Pray". The first B-flat clarinet part is arranged to be playable by a beginner on the instrument. My goal was to write a piece that would sound advanced, but give a recent student to the clarinet a chance to participate and shine with the rest. I have such a one in mind and I dedicate this work to my daughter, Valerie.
