Picture yourself strolling through Venice, Italy, enjoying the contrasts between old and new. The city’s history and music stretch back at least to Baroque times, but perhaps you’ll encounter some modern, atmospheric jazz clubs as well. (I’m making all of this up – I’ve never been to Italy.) Of course to wander properly in Venice you’d need to travel by Gondola, hence the title. This piece is for solo viola, an adventurous bass clarinet, 2 trumpets, and strings. The solo part works even better on a 5-string violin.
