The first time I heard Bernstein's Overture to Candide, I was blown away: a melody in a seven meter that was gorgeous! As it turned out, it isn't written in seven, but it does sound like it. In this piece I've attempted to invest some beauty into a 5/4 meter. It's far more delicate than Bernstein's soaring work, but I think I've found some beauty here. One of my friends teaches double reeds at a local university, and I hope that some students in her department would like to perform this piece: it's written for 3 oboes, English horn and bassoon. The cutesy title is because I think it kind of sounds like a waltz.
