Although I have described this piece as "Variations" this is not strictly accurate. It consists of two different treatments of the melody (both in stirring style as befits this patriotic melody!), and then a free fugato derived from the opening few bars.
It does call for competent players, particularly the horn part in the second variation, in which the part lies rather high.
