Towards the end of 1791, Beethoven scribbled in his sketchbook this theme and ideas for a few variations. A few pages later ideas for more variations appear, after which he seems never to have returned to the piece. I came across a facsimile of these sketches when I was studying the creative process, and looking for an unfinished work by a past composer to complete. I scribbled ideas for several more variations, and collated the best results into what you see here. Needless to say, nearly all of Beethoven’s work is here, and only about three and a half variations of mine.
