The well-known waltz movement differs from a ‘classical’ symphony when a minuet might have been expected for the second movement. Instead we have a delightfully graceful and elegant melody which could almost be ballet music. Certainly ballroom dancers would have difficulty keeping up with this waltz – it needs professionals! Tchaikovsky’s former mentor Anton Rubinstein (1829–1894) declared it to be Tchaikovsky’s best piece.
