Gabriel Urbain Fauré (12 May 1845 – 4 November 1924) a French composer, organist, pianist and teacher. One of the leading French composers of his generation, his musical style influenced many 20th-century composers.

Fauré’s family were cultured though not particularly musical. They noticed Gabriel's musical talents and at the age of nine, he was sent to the music school École Niedermeyer de Paris , where he was trained as a church organist and choirmaster.

His teacher, the composer Camille Saint-Saëns, became a lifelong friend.

Fauré became a founding member of the Société Nationale de Musique , formed in 1871. This promoted new French music and many of Fauré's works were first presented at the Society's concerts.

During the last twenty years of his life, he suffered from increasing deafness.

Although his best-known and most accessible compositions are generally his earlier ones, Fauré composed many of his most highly regarded works in his later years, which were composed in a more harmonically and melodically complex style.
