A visit to Argentina inspired this composition. In Buenos Aires, tango dancing is almost a cult, with dancers to be seen in the streets, in tango clubs and in Las Vegas-style shows. The distinctive music is also very much in the air, ranging from old-style pieces played by large tango orchestras, to small trios and duos accompanying the street performers. There is a wealth of excellent tango music to hear and modern innovations incorporating synthesizers and techno-pop forms are being created. It is a vibrant and very much alive art form.
Recoleta is an upscale district in Buenos Aires, with classy apartments, sidewalk cafes, striking colonial architecture, and exciting night life. The music is meant to be emotional, with dramatic swings in mood, reflecting the nature of the dance. The intro could be the attention-getting opener for a 1940’s movie, then switches to a more gentle feeling. We then move back and forth between passages that move along with more passion and others that reflect a quieter sadness. While writing this piece, I imagined the dance and have tried to evoke its presentation.
