COMPOSER’S NOTE

No 1 In memory of a brief journey through the county of Kent on a bright early Spring morning, I wanted to compose something English but not “pastoral-folksong English”. Therefore I decided to base a piece on that most English phenomenon : “change ringing” of church bells in which a certain number of bells are rung in all possible permutations. The title refers to a small amount of something as in the title of the first chapter of Dorothy Sayers “The Nine Tailors” :

A Short Touch of Kent Treble Bob Major.

No 2 Is a slow-ish rumba based on a limited number of chords. It is in a modal Eb major (with flattened 7th) but ends unexpectedly in C minor.
