Yes, of course this is true. It is a set of variations, designed to see what different ideas can be extracted from a single simple theme.

Interesting, I've now allowed the score to be transposed. although this will still have "sharp key" passages.
I spoke to the people I wrote it for and they said
"he has a point… because we are used to playing in E flat more than E. Of course E flat will sound better but that doesn't mean that we cannot play well in E."
What I will do is change some passages to their enharmonic equivalents where appropriate. i.e. the C# passage can easily be in D-flat.

It wasn't written to be student material (why do people keep assuming this?). It was written for an exemplary quartet who have great visual appeal. Besides, some students are rather good.
