You are purchasing high quality sheet music PDF files suitable for printing or viewing on digital devices. The twelve miniatures for keyless Chalumeau/Saxonett and piano were composed in the summer of 2022, in response to my wife purchasing the instrument. The challenge was to write a set of pieces within the range of a chromatic ninth, while making them interesting to play and developing technique. The set of miniatures are an eclectic mix of different styles, ranging from a simple elegant minuet ‘Strawberries and Cream’ to jazz inspired harmonies of ‘Misty thoughts'. Each piece is a portrait of a holiday at the seaside, from ‘The Arrival’ to the last piece ‘Sunset’. Various techniques are explored, from articulation and phrasing to breath control. Intonation is one of the challenges of playing the keyless Chalumeau. Use of chromaticism adds shade and light to the compositions as well as challenging the performer. The top note of the instrument ‘D’ is used twice in the collection – ‘Lullaby’. A variety of different key signatures are used throughout the collection to help develop the performer’s understanding of such musical elements. The pieces are easily playable on the tenor recorder, as well as the chalumeau range of the clarinet. The interpretation of each piece is left up to the discretion of the performers. I hope you enjoy exploring this small but wonderful instrument through the miniatures as much as we do, while playing the set.
