Theme and Variations on an old American reel, originally written as fodder for Martin Tousignant’s fervid imagination. The variations highlight the capabilities of soloists and sections alike, in the style of wind bands of a bygone era. The term "turkey shoot" likely originates from a method of hunting wild turkeys in which the hunter coming upon a flock, intentionally scatters them. Once the flock is scattered, the hunter sets up and waits, as the scattered flock will return to that point individually, making them easy targets. This idea mirrors the form of the piece, with all players coming home to roost in the final, percussive, galop. More than arranger, I am very happy to call Martin my compositional partner, as he completes my musical thoughts in an uncanny manner. (John Srutowski, Oshkosh, Wisconsin, USA.)
