“Tsuchigumo” is based loosely on the Japanese noh play of the same name. The ailing Reiko is set upon by a giant spider that is disguised as a monk. Reiko regains enough strength to defeat the arachnid. Both performers must wear blank masks and follow the directions in the score.

The piece was written for a "15 Minutes of Fame" call for scores to write a piece 1 minute long for double bass and clarinet on a vaguely Japanese theme. My piece wasn't selected for performance but I had fun writing it. Maybe someone will have fun playing it one day!
